New Continuity of Apple would tie OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 together so as to provide an integrated support of Mac and mobile devices for compatible application. So as an Apple user, what expects do you have on this fall’s Continuity?
What is Continuity?
Continuity allows for collaboration between iOS device and Mac whatever the platform is:
– Make or take a phone call
– Receive and send SMS or iMessages
– Personal Hotspot
– Handoff
– Seamless integration: integrate PC and smartphone
All the above features also depend on Bluetooth LE’s connected devices and scope.
And what Handoff means is that you may create a document and edit it on an iPad and then switch to a Mac to continue the editing while finish it on an iPhone finally – which means whenever you need to work on it, it will always be ready for your review.
Apple ID
Apple ID is what connects all your devices, apps, and services (includes the Song Collection and iTunes payment). To make the ID play its role, you have to log in your Apple ID on two platforms at the same time.
How does Handoff works?
As long as you log in an Apple ID, you can feel its magic power. Open a compatible application on a device and the link would automatically appear on all your other devices. Click the link and you may start your work now. On an iOS 8, the link would show up at the bottom left of the screen lock, while for OS X at the left of Dock.
What applications does Handoff support?
Handoff introduced initial support for mails, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Map, Messages, Reminders, Calendar and Contacts.
Share files between Mac and iOS
AirDrop in iOS 8 now can finally support for connecting iOS and Mac which is a big change that makes files sharable now on all your devices.
How to make use of other Continuity features?
Assume that your Mac is connected with iOS device:
– Answer your phone on Mac: Within the connection range of Mac, there will be a reminding from OS X notification center if a call comes. Users can either take or make calls on Mac by the reminding.
– SMS messages: Same as above, users who uses Messaging can read or send messages on Mac.
– Personal Hotspot: Users don’t have to set and he would see iPhone appear in iOS 8 Wi-Fi list.
Compatible devices:
- MacBook Air (2011 and above)
- MacBook Pro (2012 and above)
- Retina MacBook Pro (2012 and above)
- iMac (2012 and above)
- Mac mini (2011 and above)
- Mac Pro (2013 and above)
